Senate President Busola Saraki
The National President of the Mega Progressive Peoples Party (MPPP), Oludare Falade, has said that the on-going trial of the Senate President, Busola Saraki, is a slap on the Office of the Senate President and an affront to the Olusola Saraki political dynasty.
Falade, who described himself as a follower of the late Olusola Saraki, father of the Senate President, told Daily Independent that the trial is highly political and looks like a vendetta.
Falade said: “I have always maintained that you cannot destroy your best and brightest in the quest to sanitise decayed institutions. You need to sanitise the system as a whole.
“For me, as a student of the works of Oloye, Dr. Olusola Saraki, I see the trial as an affront on the Saraki dynasty. We are one of the few that canvassed that people like Bukola Saraki can contribute to the political development of this country and he has not failed us.
He maintained that in 1999, when Saraki was a Special Assistant to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he ans Segun Awolowo had continued to learn the ropes, adding, “If Obasanjo was able to groom Saraki till date to attain the position of Senate President, it will be disastrous to this generation to drag him down.
“The contributions of the Saraki family to the advancement of Nigerian political democracy call for caution in the area of using Bukola Saraki as a scapegoat. Agreed that nobody is above the law, I will not like anyone to destroy our own generation.
“He (Saraki) was a governor, a medical doctor, a fine banker, a Senator, and now the Senate President. Are we saying that the President will present his budget by bowing to the Senate President? Are we destroying an institution?
“I can assure you that there are exceptional cases. It is the institution that must be strengthened in the war against corruption and not to target individuals.”
Falade urged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to find a political solution to the Saraki’s travail and the lingering leadership crises in the National Assembly caucuses of the party to save the nation and the legislature and by extension the nation from further embarrassments.
He maintained that other countries will continue to laugh at Nigeria as long as the crisis at the National Assembly and the trial of the Senate President last.
