Senate President Bukola Saraki
The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, yesterday, ruled out a political solution to the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), describing the statement as mere speculation.
Gbajabiamila, who stated that Saraki’s travail has nothing to do with the internal politics of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressed that since the problem is a legal matter, he could not understand how such a matter can be resolved politically.
He spoke with the State House correspondents shortly after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said: “I can’t comment and promote things that are unsubstantiated. You know, the problem is a legal problem and I don’t know how you can treat constitutional, legal problems politically. If that be the case, perhaps I may not know.”
He assured that the National Assembly had gotten over its leadership crises.
He assured that the National Assembly had gotten over its leadership crises.
“Everything that has a beginning has an end. I don’t think and I don’t know if there is any leadership crisis in the National Assembly. I am not sure at what you are alluding to; I am not in the Senate. But the little I understand is that there is an issue involving the Senate President. That has nothing to do with the APC.
“That has to do with the issue of law and I am sure the Senate President is being represented and he will have his day in court. If the matter comes up, I don’t think it is an APC issue; it is not an APC issue at all. There is no crisis, not in the House,” he said.
He explained further that the constitution of House committees in the lower chamber has not brought any crisis.
“It would be handled by members of the House. The correct thing is that justice is done, equity is done and once that is done, then there is not going to be a problem,” he said.
While describing his visit to the president as a routine one, Gbajabiamila disclosed that issues bordering on budget and others were discussed.
“This is just a routine visit to Mr. President; one arm of government visiting another arm. You know the important role of the House. I being in charge of government business in the House, we discussed the issue of budget and a few other House-keeping matters to further cement the relationship between the House and the President.
“Absolutely, we understand the logic. Unlike the envelop budget system, which had issues under the best circumstances, zero budget where everything starts from scratch, they have to justify every penny. It’s part of the government’s efforts to block leakages and the House is in firm support,” he remarked.
Gbajabiamila said the House of Representatives is in support of President Buhari’s ongoing anti-corruption war.
