The organiser of the Nigeria International Wine Festival, Mr Innocent Mbonu, has advocated implementation of drastic measures to curb the importation of fake wines into the country.
Mbonu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the ongoing Nigeria International Wine Festival in the FCT on Friday.
Wine is a beverage made of fermented juice of various kinds of fruits, mostly grapes and plants, which may or may not contain some percentage of alcohol.
The theme for the 2015 festival is “Roadmap to Unlocking Industry through Culture, Entrepreneurship and Branding”.
He said he would set up a union that would collaborate with relevant government organisations responsible for ensuring the production of quality beverages in the country.
The organiser said that his organisation would also partner with government agencies to check the importation of fake wines by traders.
“I do not doubt the capabilities of these authorities and that was why we involved them in the festival, so that we all can put heads together and move our country and the industry forward.
“There are some games the cabals are playing that these organisations did not even know.
“And that’s why the stakeholders need to come together and see what we can all do without ethnic, religious and all sentiments to tackle it.
“We must try as much as possible to fine-tune everything for ourselves, otherwise, the country become a dumping ground.
“We must try as much as possible to fine-tune everything for ourselves, otherwise, the country become a dumping ground.
“We are seriously setting up a union that will collaborate with these authorities to ensure full achievement of this goal.
“Through this union also, we can easily identify who is bringing fake and real wines into the market.
“The union will also look at ways of promoting quality and good relationship among our foreign counterparts for the advancement of the industry in Nigeria as well,’’ Mbonu said.
He assured Nigerians that he would sustain the wine festival which started since 2005 and had become an annual event that comes up every third week of November. (NAN)
NAN reports that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria are responsible for monitoring standard of imports into the country.
